Give this a read:

By default, the Exchange Connectors won't receive/send e-mail by default.

Thanks for clearing that up I really appreciate it...I'm fairly new to implementing email servers let-alone exchange 2007. I am having trouble recieving and sending email from exchange 2007 and thought it may be a dns issue.

As stated in Comment #6, this article is about Internet DNS. The article has nothing to do with internal DNS at all. You don't need an internal MX record. MX records are used for internet mail servers to find your server so they can send mail to your domain. If you have multiple Exchange Servers, they use Exchange/AD information and Connectors to send mail to each other, not MX records.

So the configuration in regards to dns would be done on external dns server? And internal mx dns record would point to hostname of exchnage server internally?

This was a lab environment to show an example. This wasn't a real Internet DNS server.

All this is about internet DNS. I'm not sure what gave you the idea that any of this had to do with internal DNS. If it's the Windows DNS part, then if you look at the server name in the DNS console, even that has the name InternetDNS.

I'm a bit confused with this DNS setup? Is this your internal DNS sever for your Active Domain? so your AD domain name and public domain name is shudnow.net? If so then essentially you are running split brain DNS? Can you shed some light as I'm in the process of deploying exchange 2007.

Yes, you're correct. What I was meaning to say is that when using Windows DNS, an MX is more like a CNAME than another typical record as both records are pointing to an A record. I re-read what I wrote and see how I definitely messed up the wording. I removed the CNAME part altogether and re-wording things to be more clear in achieving the point I was attempting to make.

Thanks for pointing that out.
